Family
Ericaceae
Botanical Name
RHODODENDRON 'Girard's Pink'( Girard Hybrid)
Plant Common Name
Evergreen Azalea
General Description
Showy clusters of large magenta-pink flowers adorn the branches of this evergreen hybrid azalea in spring. The broadly funnel shaped blooms bear an orange blotch on the upper petal. This cultivar slowly forms a compact rounded plant clad in small oval mid-green leaves.
Azaleas prefer sites with partial shade and highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They favor warm summers and cool winters and require some winter cold for good growth. The flower buds develop in summer for the following spring’s display, so prune shortly after flowering, if necessary. Place them where they will not require restrictive pruning.
Renowned for their cold hardiness and disease resistance, Girard evergreen azaleas are great for shaded woodland gardens, edging, beds, ground cover, accent plants, Japanese gardens, containers and bonsai. They originated at the Ohio-based Girard Nursery.
