Family
Ericaceae
Botanical Name
RHODODENDRON 'Ice Cube'( Shammarello Hybrid)
Plant Common Name
Ice Cube Rhododendron, Rhododendron, Shammarello Hybrid Rhododendron
General Description
Combining exceptional cold-hardiness, a dense rounded habit, and showy late-spring bloom, this Shammarello Hybrid bears conical clusters of large white flowers with a sunny yellow blotch. The wide-flaring, funnel-shaped blooms have slightly wavy edges. This rounded head-high evergreen shrub has long elliptic olive-green leaves.
Like most rhododendrons, 'Ice Cube' does well in partial shade and highly organic, well-drained, acid soil. It departs from the norm, however, in tolerating considerable sun. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Do any necessary pruning directly after the flowers fade, before next year's buds form. Try to site it where it has room to grow to full size.
This handsome evergreen works well in shrub borders and naturalistic plantings.
