RHODODENDRON 'Jean Haerens'

Image of Rhododendron 'Jean Haerens' (Belgian Indica Group)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Jean Haerens'( Belgian Indica Group)

Plant Common Name

Evergreen Azalea

General Description

A Belgian Indica hybrid, this evergreen azalea bears showy clusters of large ruffled double white flowers with broad red margins. The scentless flowers appear from early to mid-spring, but may also bloom in late fall and winter in frost-free districts. The upright, chest-high plants have elliptical, dark glossy-green leaves.

Primarily derived from the East Indian species Rhododendron simsii, Rhododendron indicum, and Rhododendron murconatum, Belgian Indica Hybrid azaleas were originally developed for greenhouse forcing but perform well in the landscape in areas where temperatures are moderate.

Belgian Indica azaleas prefer sites with partial shade and highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They do best with warm summers and cool winters. The flower buds develop in summer for the following spring’s display, so prune shortly after flowering, if necessary. Ideally, place them where they have room to grow to full size. Belgian Indica azaleas are popular for containers, Japanese gardens, bonsai, and the front of beds and borders.
