RHODODENDRON 'Kalinka'

Image of Rhododendron 'Kalinka' (Hachmann Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Kalinka'( Hachmann Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Hachmann Hybrid Rhododendron, Kalinka Rhododendron, Rhododendron

General Description

One of hundreds of outstanding rhododendron hybrids introduced since 1951 by Hans and Holger Hachmann of Barmstedt, Germany, 'Kalinka' bears showy domed clusters of purplish pink flowers from mid- to late spring. The wide-flaring, wavy-edged, funnel-shaped blooms have a yellowish-green flare and brown spotting on their upper lobes. The dense, rounded, medium-sized plants have large glossy green leaves with fuzzy brown undersides. Like most rhododendrons, Hachmann Hybrids prefer chilly winters, moderate summers, partial shade, and highly organic, well-drained, acid soil. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Do any necessary pruning directly after the flowers fade, before next year's buds form. Try to site them where they have room to grow to full size.

This hardy, handsome evergreen works well in shrub plantings and mixed borders.
