Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Mandarin Lights'( NORTHERN LIGHTS SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Deciduous Azalea

General Description

Valued for their extreme hardiness and their colorful spring flowers, the Northern Lights Series is a group of hybrid deciduous azaleas developed by the University of Minnesota. The fragrant, rich orange blooms of 'Mandarin Lights' appear in dense spherical trusses from mid- to late spring. The ruffled, broadly trumpet-shaped flowers bear a bright orange blotch on their upper lobe. This prolifically blooming cultivar gradually forms a dense upright shrub with oval olive-green leaves that are slightly skunky-scented if bruised. The leaves turn maroon in fall.

Plant this azalea in full to partial sun in acidic humus-rich soil. Excellent drainage is required. An airy organic mulch will keep the shallow roots moist and cool. Northern Lights azaleas are wonderful specimens for cold-climate gardens, best shown off against dark evergreens such as hemlocks. They are also lovely mixed together for a breathtaking spring display of contrasting flower colors.
