RHODODENDRON 'Pink and Sweet'

Image of Rhododendron 'Pink and Sweet' (Weston Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Pink and Sweet'( Weston Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Deciduous Azalea, Pink and Sweet Azalea, Weston Hybrid Azalea

General Description

Noteworthy for its showy fragrant flowers, its late season of bloom, its colorful fall foliage, and its exceptional hardiness, this medium-sized, upright, deciduous shrub is one of many azalea cultivars introduced by Weston Nurseries of Hopkinton, Massachusetts. A hybrid of the eastern North American native Rhododendron arborescens, it bears showy heads of spicily scented silvery pink flowers in late spring and early summer. The wide-flaring funnel-shaped blooms have a large yellow blotch on their upper lobe. The long, elliptic, mildew-resistant leaves are dark green in summer and turn burgundy, orange, and yellow in fall.

This beautiful and hardy shrub prefers partial shade and highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well drained. It does well in full sun in cool moist sites. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. It likes warm summers and cool winters and require some winter cold for good growth. If pruning is necessary, do so as the flowers fade, before the new flower buds form. Try to site this tall-growing cultivar where it can grow to full size.

This azalea makes an ideal subject for mixed borders and shrub plantings in partial shade.
