RHODODENDRON 'Pink Twins'

Image of Rhododendron 'Pink Twins' (Gable Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Pink Twins'( Gable Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Gable Hybrid Rhododendron, Pink Twins Rhododendron, Rhododendron

General Description

One of the few rhododendrons with semi-double blooms, this hybrid of Rhododendron catawbiense bears large spherical heads of soft pink flowers from mid- to late spring. The fragrant ruffled funnel-shaped blooms are hose-in-hose (with two superimposed sets of petals). This broad, slow-growing, shoulder-high shrub has medium green oval leaves with yellow stems.

This is one of several large-leaved rhododendron hybrids developed by Joseph Gable of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, who is best known as the father of the Gable Hybrid evergreen azaleas.

This beautiful shrub prefers partial shade and humus-rich, acid, moist, well-drained soil. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. It does best in warm summers and cool winters and needs some winter cold for good growth. The flower buds develop in summer for the following spring’s display, so prune shortly after flowering, if necessary. Ideally, place it where it will not require pruning.
