RHODODENDRON 'Regal'

Image of Rhododendron 'Regal' (P J M Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Regal'( P J M Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

PJM Hybrid Rhododendron, Regal Rhododendron, Rhododendron

General Description

One of the PJM Hybrids – a group of selections resulting from a cross between the North American rhododendron R. minus var. minus Carolinianum Group and the Asian R. dauricum – 'Regal' offers the rock-hardiness, compact growth, and abundant flowers typical of its tribe. The spherical trusses of bright lavender-pink blooms flower alongside the forsythias and Dutch crocuses in early spring. This rounded, shoulder-high shrub is densely clothed in small, elliptic, glossy dark green leaves that turn mahogany tones in cold weather. The leaves are slightly aromatic when bruised.

Like most rhododendrons, 'Regal' favors chilly winters, moderate summers, and highly organic, well-drained, acid soil. It departs from the norm, however, in preferring full sun or light shade. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Any necessary pruning should be done soon after flowering, before new flower buds form. Try to site this shrub where it will have room to grow to full size.

This handsome evergreen works well in mixed borders, hedges, and foundation plantings.
