Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Robin Hill Wendy'( Robin Hill Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Evergreen Azalea, Robin Hill Azalea, Robin Hill Wendy Azalea

General Description

Azalea ‘Wendy’ bears large blooms of light pink striped, flecked and streaked with dark pink and they have a gray-orange spotted blotch. The flowers appear in the late spring or early summer. The flowers are single, widely funnel-shaped and have frilly edges. The plants are dwarf, rounded, well-branched and dense. Evergreen leaves are elliptical, glossy and dark green.

Robin Hill hybrid azaleas are a large group of evergreen shrubs that were hybridized in New Jersey by chemist and rhododendron enthusiast, Robert Gartrell. They are complex hybrids which combine the attributes of small-flowered hardy azaleas with those of the more tender large-flowered types. They are cold hardy, compact, spreading or mounding, have an extended blooming season and bear large flowers on small plants.

Azaleas prefer sites with partial shade and highly organic, acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They prefer locations with warm summers, cool winters and do require some winter cold for good growth. The flower buds develop in summer for the following spring’s display, so prune shortly after flowering, if necessary. All azaleas look their best when mature size is considered when placing in the landscape to avoid the necessity of constant pruning.

Robin Hill azaleas are great for shaded woodland gardens, foundations, hedges, accent plant, Japanese gardens, containers and bonsai.
