RHODODENDRON 'Rosa Mundi'

Image of Rhododendron 'Rosa Mundi' (Standish & Noble Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Rosa Mundi'( Standish & Noble Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Rhododendron, Rosa Mundi Rhododendron, Standish & Noble Hybrid Rhododendron

General Description

Introduced in the mid-nineteenth century, this Standish & Noble Hybrid is still valued for its dense compact habit and showy early-spring bloom. The large pale-pink funnel-shaped flowers are held in tight spherical clusters. This rounded shoulder-high shrub has large elliptic bright green leaves.

Developed in the 1840s and 1850s by John Standish and Charles Noble at the renowned Sunningdale Nursery in Devon, England, Standish & Noble hybrids figure prominently in the development of the modern garden rhododendron, and are still valued for their toughness and beauty.

Like most rhododendrons, 'Rosa Mundi' favors chilly winters, moderate summers, and highly organic, well-drained, acid soil. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Any necessary pruning should be done soon after flowering, before new flower buds form. Try to site this shrub where it will have room to grow to full size.

This handsome evergreen works well in shrub plantings, mixed borders, and naturalistic shade gardens.
