General Description

Blooming in summer with rather humble white flowers, you'll likely notice the clove-like fragrance before you focus on the blossoms. This upright, rather open-formed deciduous shrub is native to the swamps of the eastern United States, from Maine to Alabama, and then westward to Texas. With time it forms thickets.

The many, sreading and uprgiht branches bear oval deep green leaves with a satiny luster and tiny hairs. In early summer, sticky-haired white flowers that resemble the floral tubes of flowering tobacco appear in clusters at branch tips. The fragrance is strong and clove-like. Depending on climate, the flowering can be as early as early spring, or delayed until late autumn.

Plant swamp azalea in a moist to barely wet acidic soil in partial shade. It tolerates short bouts with both drought and flooding, but the roots of this plant cannot remain permanently underwater. Use it in damp glens in a woodland garden or soggy part of a mixed border or under a house downspout.

There are andromedotoxins in all parts of the rhododendron plant with associated health concerns. For more information visit: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Rhodosp.htm .
