Rosaceae
Rosa 'Ausmas'(GRAHAM THOMAS®)
English Shrub Rose
One of the most popular of the hardy shrub roses developed by famed English rosarian David Austin, this 1983 introduction is prized for its sunny double blooms that open from pink-tinted buds.
The long, arching, thorny stems of this medium to large deciduous shrub are lined with glossy, mid- to dark-green, pinnate leaves with several oval leaflets. The spherical, apricot-pink buds open to flat-topped, fully double, golden-yellow roses that fade to pale yellow. The flowers have a spicy fragrance. Bloom is heaviest in spring but recurs throughout the growing season.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. Many rose cultivars are rife with pest and disease problems. They are particularly prone to foliar fungal diseases and thus benefit from good air circulation. Fortunately, many new cultivars (including 'Graham Thomas') are relatively disease-resistant. Use this shrub rose in mixed borders and hedges. In mild climates it produces long rambling canes that can be trained on arbors and trellises.
