The Conard-Pyle Co./Star® Roses
Family
Rosaceae
Botanical Name
Rosa 'Blaze'
Plant Common Name
Climbing Rose
General Description
Famous for its vigor and abundant red flowers, this was the main climbing rose favored for training onto white pickets in the early 20th century. It is derived from the older ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ but has increased disease resistance and vigor. It produces long arching canes twining case that are easily trained. When the central canes are trained to grow horizontally, smaller lateral stems arise to form bud and bloom.
This rose is typically trained along a vertical surface. Its sparse foliage is deciduous and achieves yellow and scarlet tones in the fall. The cup-shaped, loosely double blooms of ‘Blaze’ have as many as twenty five petals each. It flowers the most when it first breaks bud in late spring but will rebloom repeatedly over the season, especially if conditions remain favorable. The fruit is a berry-like hip, which provides food to wildlife.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. This is less of a problem with 'Blaze' because it is moderately resistant.
This rose is ideal as a fence rambler, planted on a pergola or as a trellis specimen.
