ROSA 'Cécile Brünner'

Botanical Name

ROSA 'Cécile Brünner'

Plant Common Name

Cécile Brünner Polyantha Rose, Polyantha Rose

General Description

Dubbed the sweetheart rose, this cultivar is cherished for its perfect miniature flowers that bloom on full-sized, upright, bushy plants. This true Victorian rose was bred in France by Joseph Pernet-Ducher from a cross between 'Mignonette' and 'Madame de Tartas' and was first introduced in 1881.

Its fine, dense, thorny branches are covered with small, light green, compound leaves that are tinged bronze when they first emerge. Famous for its vigor, ‘Cecile Brunner’ blooms over the entire season from spring to late fall frost, though its first period of bloom is the most prolific. The fully double, baby pink flowers emerge from sweet pointy buds and are truly miniature with a light sweet fragrance making them ideal for small bouquets.

Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates, because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. Roses are rife with pest and disease problems. Fortunately, ‘Cecile Brunner’ is quite disease resistant, which has kept it in widespread cultivation.

This small, bushy rose doesn’t require frequent pruning. It is old-fashioned but has modern characteristics, such as an ever-blooming nature and good disease resistance, so it can be planted in any sunny garden. Still, it is best placed in old-fashioned cottage gardens, cutting gardens or borders around old homes.
