ROSA (ROSEMARY HARKNESS)

Image of Rosa 'Harrowbond' (ROSEMARY HARKNESS)

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

ROSA 'Harrowbond'(ROSEMARY HARKNESS)

Plant Common Name

Hyrbid Tea Rose, Rosemary Harkness Hybrid Tea Rose

General Description

The free flowering hybrid tea rose, Rosemary Harkness blooms in flushes from late spring to fall with large, cupped, double flowers that have orange-yellow petals edged in salmon. The flowers are borne singly at the tip of long, new stems and are lightly fragrant. This vigorous, upright, deciduous shrub has disease resistant foliage and is moderately compact.

This deciduous, shrubby rose has stems lined with small, reddish thorns and glossy, deep green leaves. It blooms from early summer through frost with good care and maintenance. Flowering may occur earlier in southern zones. Its double flowers are bowl-shaped, lightly fragrant and have loosely arranged petals.

Like most roses, Rosemary Harkness (also known as 'HaRrowbond') grows and flowers best in full sun and average, well-drained soil. It needs a steady supply of nutrients and water, but fertilize and water sparingly to avoid encouraging lanky growth susceptible to diseases. Mulch with compost, shredded leaves, or composted manure to enrich the soil and conserve moisture. To discourage blackspot and mildew, give the plant room so breezes can dry the leaves after a rain. Also, avoid wetting the leaves when watering the plant; instead, water the soil directly. Fortunately, Rosemary Harkness shows good disease resistance. To encourage repeat flowering, prune spent stems to a leaf with five or more leaflets and a bud at its base. A new flower stem will arise from the bud.

Use as a specimen plant in a mixed border, against a south facing wall or fence, grouped to fit the scale of a large yard, or for long-stemmed cut flowers.
