Rosa 'Highdownensis'

Image of Rosa 'Highdownensis'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

Rosa 'Highdownensis'

Plant Common Name

Moyesii Hybrid Rose

General Description

A flurry of large, single, cerise-crimson flowers grace the branches of 'Highdownensis' in summer. Spectacular urn-shaped hips of orange-red are produced after flowering and persist into fall and winter. This Rosa moyesii seedling was introduced by Sir Fredrick Sterns in 1928 and named for his garden at Highdown. It is a vigorous deciduous shrub rose with an upright, vase-shaped habit, moderate disease resistance and a shorter stature than Rosa moyesii, which can become very large.

The bristly, spiny branches of this rose produce rich green, ferny compound leaves that turn shades of coppery yellow in fall. Beautiful single roses of brilliant cerise with spidery yellow stamens are produced in late spring or early summer. The delicate roses have a very light fragrance. Large, elongated, urn-shaped hips of rich red offer visual interest and persist into fall and early winter.

Moyes' rose prefers full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. It is somewhat disease resistant. Good care and regular pruning will keep it looking its best. This rose blooms on old wood, so old, dead or dying canes should be cut out after flowering to maintain good appearance, airflow and overall health.

Well-maintained Moyes' hybrid roses provide a wealth of garden interest, and their appealing hips provide important forage to wildlife.
