Rosa 'La Ville de Bruxelles'
Damask Rose
The very old damask rose, 'La Ville de Bruxelles', is a fragrant wonder that produces loads of perfect, fully double, damask pink roses in summer. Like many antique roses, it is not a repeat bloomer. It was bred in France by Vibert and first introduced in 1849. One weakness of this upright shrub rose is that it’s prone to foliar mildew.
'La Ville de Bruxelles' is a woody deciduous shrub rose with stems lined with sharp thorns. It has a bushy habit and compound leaves of light to medium green. Its fully double flowers are deep rosy pink and have many tightly packed petals. They are produced in summer only and followed by hips that are eaten by wildlife.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates, because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. Roses are rife with pest and disease problems, especially antique selections such as this.
