Rosaceae
Botanical Name
Rosa 'Le Vésuve'
Plant Common Name
Climbing Rose, Le Vésuve Climbing Rose
General Description
The "old rose" 'Le Vésuve' produces a steady succession of mildly fragrant, china-pink roses on slender, upright to scrambling canes. This 1825 introduction is probably a hybrid between a China Rose and a Tea Rose.
This cold-tender deciduous shrub has prickly stems with dark gray-green leaves. From spring to fall (or year-round in frost-free gardens), 'Le Vésuve' bears numerous medium-sized, double, rounded roses with rolled-edged petals. The soft-pink, carmine-shaded blooms open from pointed buds of classic "tea rose" shape. This rose typically forms a dense, head-high shrub, but may sometimes assume a rambling habit.
This tough, disease-resistant shrub rose grows best in mild climates. It prefers full to part sun and good air circulation, and tolerates a wide variety of soils. Use it in mixed borders and cottage gardens, or train it.on a trellis or pergola.
