Botanical Name
Rosa 'Meidomonac'(BONICA®) PP5105
Plant Common Name
Bonica® Shrub Rose, Shrub Rose
General Description
When this rose was first introduced it revolutionized the modern rose world. Bonica® was one of the relatively maintenance free smaller, floriferous shrub roses. It was introduced in France in the early 1980s by the well-known Meilland family of rose breeders and was voted the World's Favorite Rose in 1997.
This shrub rose is a woody deciduous shrub with stems lined with sharp woody thorns. It is a compact, mounding habit and dense, deep green compound leaves. Its fully double flowers have 18 to 25 petals. They are medium sized, soft pink and held in loose clusters at the branch tips. They flower continuously throughout the season and more abundantly if the spent blooms are removed.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates, because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. Roses are rife with pest and disease problems. In fact, there are many common pests and diseases that can harm them. Fortunately, cultivars like Bonica® are bred to be disease resistant.
Shrub roses are a landscape must. They are perfect for sunny foundations, mixed borders and large landscapes. Especially pretty floriferous cultivars like this one.
