Plant Common Name
Grandiflora Rose
General Description
The vigorous grandiflora rose, 'Queen Elizabeth', was recognized as a 1955 All-America Selections Winner. Its clear pink roses are fragrant, fully double and borne on large, vigorous, upright shrubs. The long-stemmed flowers are excellent for cutting. This cultivar may also be sold under the names ‘The Queen of England’ or 'The Queen Elizabeth.'
The glossy, dark green leaves of 'Queen Elizabeth' are leathery and green. Newer growth is reddish brown. Thorny stems support very fragrant, medium pink roses with as many as 38 petals per flower. With good care, these will continue to bloom all season.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates, because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. (Roses are rife with pest and disease problems.) It also helps to remove diseased leaves from the plant and the ground. Encourage continual flowering by cutting back spent stems.
Use 'Queen Elizabeth' in the rear of a mixed border or along a large foundation. Its long-lasting, cup-shaped petals are superb for table arrangements.
