Rosa 'Tournament of Roses'
Grandiflora Rose, Tournament of Roses Grandiflora Rose
The rosy pink, fully double roses of Tournament of Roses have old-fashioned grace and appeal. This classic grandiflora rose was first introduced in 1988 and created to honor the 100th anniversary of the Tournament of Roses New Year’s parade. It is a bushy rose with semi-glossy, disease resistant foliage. This 1989 AARS winner was introduced by Jackson & Perkins, who patented it under the name ‘Jacient.’
Tournament of Roses is a woody deciduous shrub with stems lined with sharp thorns. It has a bushy habit and thick, glossy compound leaves of green. Its fully double flowers are deep rosy pink and may have as many as 25 to 30 petals per rose. They are produced all season long if plants are given good care.
Roses prefer full to partial sun, moderate temperatures and perfectly drained, slightly acid soil with average to good fertility. They grow best in places with slightly dry climates, because such climates disfavor the fungal diseases that plague them. For this reason, it is important to maintain good airflow within and between planted roses through good planting and pruning practices which will dissuade fungal attacks. Roses are rife with pest and disease problems. Fortunately, newer cultivars like this are bred to be disease resistant.
