Botanical Name

Rudbeckia fulgida

Plant Common Name

Orange Black-eyed Susan, Orange Coneflower

General Description

Black-eyed Susan, a perennial that everyone knows and loves. This native of eastern North America and Mexico is easy to grow and presents pretty golden flowers in late summer. Basal clumps of hairy, medium green leaves give rise to long leafy stalks topped with golden yellow daisies punctuated with black eyes. Plants are rhizomatous and may form large colonies over time. In the wild, black-eyed Susan inhabits grasslands and prairies, so it grows best in sites with rich soil and full sun. This fine perennial looks best when massed in mixed borders with other sun-loving perennials and ornamental grasses. Many pollinators are drawn to black-eyed Susan flowers, to include butterflies and bees. The dry, black, button-like seedheads of this plant may be left uncut to provide winter interest and seed for birds.
