Rudbeckia 'Herbstsonne'
Autumn Sun Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Herbstonne Black-eyed Susan
Adorned in yellow flowers from midsummer to early fall, ‘Herbstsonne’ boasts large daisies with drooping yellow petals. This tall, clump-forming perennial is a hybrid of the cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata) and shiny coneflower (Rudbeckia nitida).
The hardy and vigorous ‘Herbstsonne’ forms clumps of basal foliage that spread slowly over time. It sends up tall stems lined with oval, dark green leaves with deep veins. The stems are well-branched and become topped with lots of colorful daisies in summer. Each blossom has a green central cone that turns yellow as the disc flowers open. The surrounding petals are bright yellow and droop and curve downward. The flowers will continue to bloom if deadheaded and attract butterflies and bees.
Grow 'Herbstsonne' (also called 'Autumn Sun') in full to partial sun and average garden soil with moderate drainage. Its tall stems often require staking—especially if planted in partial shade or windy locations. Though tolerant of high summer heat and humidity, it can only withstand short periods of drought. This tall perennial is a great accent plant for the back of perennial gardens and looks especially good when planted with tall North American native grasses. Its daisies also make long lasting cut flowers.
