Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

RUDBECKIA hirta 'Prairie Sun'

Plant Common Name

Common Black-eyed Susan, Gloriosa Daisy, Prairie Sun Gloriosa Daisy

General Description

A distinctive cultivar of black-eyed Susan, 'Prairie Sun' has large showy flowers with a pale green central cone and bicolored yellow and orange petals.

Also called gloriosa daisy, black-eyed Susan is a short-lived perennial that originates from North America. Throughout the summer, this clump-forming, short-lived perennial puts forth, thick, leafy stems topped with large flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The daisies have pretty petals that are golden orange towards the center and paler yellow at the tips. Cut its fresh stems or deadhead regularly to encourage continued bloom.

Rudbeckia hirta grows best in full sun and well-drained, average soil. It is prone to root rot and powdery mildew, so space it well to encourage good air flow and allow its soil to dry between watering. This popular ornamental is at home in wildflower or cutting gardens and mixed borders. Like many black-eyed Susans, ‘Prairie Sun’ will self-sow.
