Salvia x sylvestris 'May Night' ('Mainacht')
Hybrid Wood Sage, May Night Ornamental Sage
Talk about an ornamental work-horse! This compact, hardy perennial produces beautiful flowers through much of the growing season. From summer to fall, flower spikes of bright violet-blue appear over crinkly, slightly aromatic, dull green leaves. These flowers are highly attractive to bees, and bloom time will be extended if spent spikes are removed.
Salvia x sylvestris is a hybrid cross between Salvia nemerosa and Salvia x superba. There are several vigorous cultivars of this hybrid, 'May Night' being the most popular.
Grow this reliable ornamental sage in full sun and fertile soil with good drainage. It is ideal for cottage gardens and sunny perennial borders.
