Black Elderberry
General Description
Black elderberry is a large upright deciduous shrub native to Europe, western Asia and northern Africa. It is grown for its ferny pinnate foliage, large musky-scented flowers, and showy clusters of fruit. A wildlife magnet, it attracts butterflies with its flowers and wildlife with its fruit.
The cultivar 'Marginata' sports deep green leaves whose elliptic toothed leaflets are bordered with creamy white. The leaves emit a somewhat unpleasant odor when crushed. In late spring and early summer, flat-topped umbels of scented white flowers appear followed in autumn by large clusters of glossy blue-black berries. The berries are used to flavor drinks and preserves.
Not fussy about soils, elderberries like a sunny spot and moderate moisture. For best fruiting, plant two or more cultivars in the shrub border or as a screen or backdrop for brightly colored perennials. For even larger, showier foliage, prune 'Marginata' hard in early spring.
