SAXIFRAGA 'Peter Pan'

Image of Saxifraga 'Peter Pan'

Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

SAXIFRAGA 'Peter Pan'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Saxifrage

General Description

The fine, needle-like, bright green foliage of the sprawling ‘Peter Pan’ saxifrage is highlighted in mid and late spring with clear pink flowers on wiry red stems. A tight, clump-forming, usually evergreen perennial, this hybrid resembles a sedum when not in flower.

The clumps of foliage are a collection of tight rosettes of flat sprays of needle-like leaves. In mid to late spring, thin reddish stems rise high above the foliage and open to showy pink, five-petalled flowers.

Grow 'Peter Pan' in partial sun to partial shade and a moist, well-drained, gritty soil. Resentful of drought, exposure to cold winds and soggy conditions, this perennial tends to rot in summer if heat and humidity are too high. If given full sun, it must have constant moisture. Cut off spent flower stems and divide the clumps before summer heat arrives. Excellent as an alpine plant for a rockery or trough, it will become a lovely groundcover or filler in between wall stones in a short time if growing conditions are perfect.
