Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

SAXIFRAGA 'Purple Rug' ('Purpurteppich')

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Saxifrage

General Description

The fine, needle-like, foliage of ‘Purple Rug’ saxifrage is highlighted in mid and late spring with red-violet flowers on tall stems. A tight, sprawling, usually evergreen perennial, this hybrid resembles a sedum when not in flower. It forms flat, sprays of leaves in tight rosettes that gather in clumps. In mid to late spring, thin red stems rise high above the foliage and hold showy magenta-violet, five-petalled flowers.

Grow 'Purple Rug' (also known as 'Purpurteppich') in partial sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained, gritty soil. Resentful of drought, exposure to cold winds and soggy conditions, this perennial may rot in summer if heat and humidity are too high. If given full sun, it will need constant moisture. Cut off spent flower stems and divide the clumps before summer heat arrives. Excellent as an alpine plant for a rockery or trough, it makes a lovely groundcover or a filler in between wall stones, covering its space in a short time if growing conditions are perfect.
