Creeping Saxifrage
A choice alpine plant, the creeping saxifrage boasts handsome green foliage and wispy, white flowers in summer and early fall. A semi-evergreen perennial that spreads via creeping stolons (prone stems), the parent species is native to the rocky uplands of China and Japan. Its leaves are rounded or kidney-shaped with jagged edges. In summer, tall stems rise above the leaves, revealing airy clusters of white flowers that may have tiny yellow or red spots.
Grow creeping saxifrage in moist, well-drained, humusy soil with some coarse grit incorporated. Avoid direct sunlight and ideally plant it in partial to full shade (but with bright light). It makes a lovely groundcover in shaded rockeries or as a houseplant in a pot or hanging basket. The cultivar 'Tricolor' has silvery green, pink and ivory leaves.
