Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

SAXIFRAGA x arendsii 'Spring Snow'

Plant Common Name

Arend's Saxifrage, Spring Snow Moss Saxifrage

General Description

The narrow leaves of ‘Spring Snow’ saxifrage are joined and highlighted in mid and late spring by pure-white flowers on wiry stems. A tight, clump-forming, usually-evergreen perennial, this is a cultivar of a hybrid first developed by Arends Nursery of Ronsdorf, Germany.

This plant grows as low rosettes of needle-like leaves in flat sprays. The rosettes in turn gather in tight clumps. In mid to late spring, thin stems rise high above the foliage and open to five-petalled flowers that have white petals much tinted with green.

Grow 'Spring Snow' in partial sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained, gritty soil. Resentful of drought, exposure to cold winds and soggy conditions, this perennial also can suffer in summer, when it tends to rot if heat and humidity are too high. If given full sun, it must have constant moisture. Cut off stems once flowers fade, and divide clumps before summer heat sets in. Excellent as an alpine plant for a rockery or trough, it becomes a lovely groundcover in a short time if growing conditions are perfect. It will reseed itself, but not weedily because a plant tends to wither after about five years.
