Cheerfully blooming in late winter and early spring with striped pale blue and blue blossoms, Misczenko squill forms beautiful drifts of plants in rockeries and meadows. An herbaceous perennial that grows from bulbs, this beauty is native to the rocky slopes and meadows of western Asia: from the Caucusus southward to Iran's Elburz Mountains.
Three to five broadly lineat leaves emerge from the bulb in very early spring. At the same time, a very short flower stem rises from these basal leaves. It holds two to six starry flowers that are silvery pale blue with deeper blue stripes. Seeds are formed and dropped nearby and new small bulbs form underground to create a spreading clump of plants over a few years. From germination to first flowering takes about three years.
Place Misczenko squill in a coarse, fertile soil that has organic matter and is moist and well-draining when the plant is growing. Full to partial sun is needed while in bloom, partial shade is fine as the foliage ripens. Use this quaint bulb as a clustered seasonal highlight in alpine troughs, rock gardens or in a meadow when other plants remain dormant. This species can be grown in turfgrass but may not become as dense or impressive of a colony if turfgrass is thick or aggressive.
