Family

Crassulaceae

Botanical Name

SEDUM mexicanum

Plant Common Name

Stonecrop

General Description

Soft and feathery, this bright green cold-tender perennial is a common sight in mild-climate gardens. Widely naturalized in Central America, it may have been introduced to that region in ancient times. This sprawling evergreen has long upright to floppy stems with narrow, fleshy, needle-like leaves in whorls around the stems. The prostrate stems may strike roots extending the overall coverage of the foliage mat. Large flat clusters of starry bright yellow flowers are borne on upright stems in late spring and early summer, but may appear at other seasons in cultivation.

This is one of the few sedums that prefers some shade and loamy soil. It is most often grown in containers and window boxes with annual flowers and tropicals. In the garden it thrives under the canopies of trees in filtered light and reasonably moist soil. However, it is capable of withstanding periodic drought at the expense of its beauty. This is an ideal plant for mixed succulent bowls and hanging baskets.
