Family
Crassulaceae
Botanical Name
Sedum pulchellum
Plant Common Name
Flowering Moss
General Description
A sedum that departs from the norm both in cultural preferences and appearance, this low evergreen perennial from the southeastern and central United States can’t decide whether it is an annual or perennial, and may indeed behave as either depending on local conditions. The low erect stems are lined with thin, soft, fleshy, bright green, needle-like leaves, forming a pleasing tufty clump. In late spring and early summer upright stalks bear numerous small pink flowers in showy branched inflorescences whose three to five arms splay starfish-style.
This sedum prefers moist, well-drained soil in partial to full sun. Plants will self-sow and naturalize if you’re lucky enough to have the perfect conditions; otherwise consider it a single season plant. Due to its unreliable nature this is not a widely marketed species, but it can often be found at botanical garden plant sales in states within its range. Use it in wildflower plantings, rock gardens, or informal borders.
