Crassulaceae
Sedum rubrotinctum
Stonecrop
Recognizable by its winter flowers and its jellybean shaped, often red-tinted leaves, this cold-tender, evergreen, shrubby perennial is a common sight in gardens of the western United States and of its native Mexico. Short, densely leaved young shoots elongate to form flopping stems with well-spaced foliage. The sprawling stems root where they contact soil. This results in a rather barren center, which is why it is often grown with other more fine textured succulents to cover the thin spots. Abundant bright yellow star-shaped flowers appear in winter and early spring.
While this is a sun lover in areas with mild summers, in hot climates it needs some afternoon shade to protect the foliage from burning. Sharply drained relatively infertile soil or a porous potting mix is required. Stem fragments root readily to form new plants. This species is ideal for mixed succulent bowls and hanging baskets.
