Crassulaceae
Sedum spathulifolium 'Cape Blanco'
Spoon-leaved Stonecrop
This delightful alpine succulent creates a beautiful dense mat of small rosettes that make a stand out in rock gardens or pots. The innermost leaves are heavily powdered with powdery bloom giving it a slightly different look than the species. Its parent is a North American native, found on rocky cliffs and ledges of mountain ranges along the Pacific Coast from California to British Columbia. The coloring is highly variable in these blue green plants which has led to many colored hybrids. These plants grow best in spring and fall, with a summertime slowdown due to the dry season in their homeland. Vigorous growth and wide adaptability make this a very popular plant for rock gardens here and in Europe.
Bright yellow flowers bloom in late spring on top of stalks mingled among the mat of rosettes. This presents a truly delicate look that is unsurpassed by others of its kin. Keep in mind that this succulent is from a dry summer region, so not only does it require very fast draining ground, it may rot if over watered or subjected to rain during that season elsewhere. This succulent is ideal for pots and troughs, but will thrive anywhere the roots remain high and dry. South facing slopes in mountain communities of the western states are ideal habitat.
