Sedum spectabile 'Brilliant'
Brilliant Stonecrop, Showy Stonecrop, Upright Sedum
The bright purplish-pink flowerheads of this beautiful and virtually indestructible perennial bring pizzazz to the late summer garden. A selection of the East Asian native Sedum spectabile, it is valued not only for its showy late-season blooms but also for its succulent pale green gray-dusted leaves. From late summer to fall, strong upright stems support the broad domed clusters of small starry flowers. This stonecrop is herbaceous, so its foliage dies back in winter, but its dried, brown, upright seedheads may be left to provide winter interest.
This perennial likes full sun and fertile well drained soil. It looks great when massed with fall blooming composites and ornamental grasses. It may be also used in large rock gardens. Sedum flowers are very attractive to bumblebees, which on cool fall mornings can often be seen "waking up" on them. Butterflies also visit stonecrops.
