Botanical Name
Sedum ternatum
Plant Common Name
Woodland Stonecrop
General Description
This exceptionally shade-tolerant sedum from the eastern United States offers lush green foliage and dainty white flowers on low trailing stems. In its native range it grows in habitats ranging from moist stream banks to dry rocky ledges. Densely borne in whorls of three on thin creeping stems that root at the nodes, the shiny round leaves form a mat-like carpet that remains green most of the year. The starry flowers appear in three-branched, white-stemmed clusters in spring.
This lovely plant is widely adaptable, tolerating heavier soils and higher moisture levels and preferring some shade. Include it in those special spots in the wildflower or rock garden, or use it in mixed borders. It also makes a useful small-scale groundcover.
