Sesleria autumnalis
Fall Sesleria
Forming upright, sprightly, evergreen tussocks of verdant knee-high foliage, this clumping evergreen perennial grass from southeastern Europe also features attractive flowers in fall. The thin bright apple-green leaves are v-shaped in cross section. Older leaves turn tawny colors in fall. In late summer narrowly cylindrical spikes of purplish flowers with creamy white stamens rise above the leaves. The spikes turn tan and brown in autumn and persist through winter.
Grow autumn moor grass in neutral or slightly alkaline, well drained soil in sun or light shade. It is long-lived and extremely drought tolerant once established. Most beautiful if planted in sweeping masses, this grass can also be used in meadows. It also is lovely in the mixed border alongside groundcovers and autumn-flowering bulbs such as fall crocuses and colchicums.
