Sesleria caerulea

Family

Poaceae

Botanical Name

Sesleria caerulea

Plant Common Name

Moor Grass

General Description

Moor grass grows in tidy tufts and blooms in unusual colors in springtime. A clumping, semi-evergreen perennial grass from northern and eastern Europe, its leaves are narrow and blue-green with a dark green underside. In early to mid-spring, wiry flower stems rise high above the leaves and display small clusters of purple flowers that fade to lavender and light blue, ripening to tan seeds by midsummer.

Grow moor grass in neutral or slightly alkaline soils with good drainage and nearly full sun, or partial shade in hotter, drier climates. It is long-lived and extremely drought-tolerant grass once established, but most attractive if the soil is moist. Most beautiful if planted in sweeping masses, this grass can also be used in meadows, or as an underplanting in a mixed border alongside groundcovers and spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils.
