SILENE uniflora 'Druett's Variegated'
Druett's Variegated Silene, Sea Campion
The creamy light-yellow and gray- green leaves ‘Druett's Variegated’ sea campion are eye-catching in their own right and make an elegant contrast to its white flowers. The parent species is a semi-evergreen, low, sprawling perennial native to the coastal regions of northern and western Europe. It has a deep root system that sustains the plant in sandy, rocky landscapes.
The leaves of ‘Druett’s Variegated’ are gray-green in the center with creamy light yellow edges. They are fleshy, oval and covered by minute hairs. In summer, wiry stems that are either held upright or trailing hold delicate white flowers. The rounded V-shaped petals are held in a plump, globe-like calyx that is cream colored. Pollinated by butterflies, this plant will scatter seeds around. The calyx body dries to tan and persists, adding interest amid the leaves in fall and winter.
Grow 'Druett's Variegated' in full to partial sun and moist, freely-draining soils that are not acidic. Ideal for beachside gardens as well as rockeries and nooks in dry mortar retaining walls, it will haphazardly reseed itself, making it good for naturalizing.
