Grandiflora

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

SPHAGNETICOLA trilobata

Plant Common Name

Rabbit's Paw, Trailing Daisy, Yellow Dots

General Description

An aggressive trailing evergreen perennial that rapidly cloaks the ground with shiny green foliage and sunny yellow daisies, this native of tropical America is best known by its former botanical name, Wedelia. Its long lax stems root at the nodes to form extensive mats of fleshy oval or three-lobed leaves. Small yellow daisies appear just above the foliage whenever weather is sunny and warm, but primarily from spring through summer. Butterflies and bees enjoy these blooms.

This rampant perennial succeeds in any soil, but is most rambunctious in sand and loam. It tolerates exteme heat and salt spray. Plants flower best in full sun, but grow lushly in sun or partial shade. This is an aggressive and potentially invasive perennial in frost-free regions, where it can be used as a groundcover or for erosion control in sun or shade. It may also be treated as an annual for hanging baskets or large containers.

Fragments of this plant root readily in moist, warm soils, making eradication difficult. Check regional noxious weed lists if you garden in Hawaii, the southern United States, or other areas where this plant may be invasive.
