Family

Caprifoliaceae

Botanical Name

SYMPHORICARPOS orbiculatus 'Spun Sugar'

Plant Common Name

Coralberry

General Description

A variegated selection of a tough hardy eastern North American shrub, 'Spun Sugar' features small white-edged leaves from spring to fall and masses of bright fruit from fall into winter. Borne in the thousands on dense twiggy stems, the pea-sized purple-red berries take center stage once the small, gray, cream-rimmed leaves drop. The berries persist well into winter, attracting hungry songbirds. Insignificant pink-flushed flowers precede the fruits in summer. This cultivar eventually forms a rounded shoulder-high shrub.

Grow this adaptable shrub in full to partial sun, keeping in mind that fruiting increases with sunlight. It tolerates all kinds of soil types and is an excellent candidate for garden sites where everything else seems to fail. It may look a bit unkempt after a few years and require a severe late winter pruning to rejuvenate it. It is also susceptible to powdery mildew, a fungus that discolors and disfigures the foliage. Use it in the mixed shrub border or as a screen or tall groundcover; cut the berry-laced branches to use in arrangements.
