Family

Oleaceae

Botanical Name

SYRINGA 'Bailbelle' PP12294

Plant Common Name

Baibelle Liliac, Lilac

General Description

Denser, smaller, daintier, and more pest and disease resistant than common lilac, Tinkerbelle™ is one of a new generation of lilac hybrids that is a good fit for the average yard. It results from a cross made in Holland between two outstanding "small-leaved" lilacs, Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin' and Syringa pubescens ssp. microphylla ‘Superba’. The conical clusters of spicily scented pale pink blooms open from beautifully contrasting purple-red buds in mid-spring, and sometimes recur sparsely in late summer. Butterflies, hawk moths, and hummingbirds flock to the tubular flowers. The bright green new leaves provides a striking foil for the flowers. Smaller and more refined than those of common lilac, the heart-shaped leaves darken as they mature. This stout-stemmed plant forms a compact rounded shoulder-high shrub that does not sucker as common lilac does.

Grow this hardy and adaptable shrub in full to partial sun and well-drained mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil. It requires winter chill to flower abundantly. Monitor for mildew, especially in humid droughty summers. Use this relatively compact lilac in mixed borders, cottage gardens, or informal hedges and screens. Enjoy the cut flowers indoors in a vase.
