Family

Oleaceae

Botanical Name

SYRINGA 'My Favorite'

Plant Common Name

Lilac, My Favorite Lilac

General Description

The name Hulda Klager will forever be connected with the breeding of lilacs in the Northwest United States. Bearing deep purple, very double flowers, this cultivar of common lilac was her personal favorite of all her hybrids, and is named accordingly. Opening from grape-like buds, the intensely fragrant blooms cluster at the tips of stout upright branches. This is a robust lilac with a rounded, open form. Densely clad in dark-green, heart-shaped foliage, it makes a fine informal hedge or background plant.

Grow this hardy and adaptable shrub in full to partial sun and well-drained mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil. It requires winter chill and moderate summers to grow vigorously and flower abundantly. It is susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in humid droughty conditions. Place it near a path or patio, where its perfumed flowers can work their magic. They are also wonderful in bouquets.
