Family

Oleaceae

Botanical Name

Syringa patula 'Miss Kim'

Plant Common Name

Korean Lilac, Manchurian Lilac, Miss Kim Lilac

General Description

Tougher and later blooming than the common lilac, Miss Kim lilac is an attractive compact deciduous shrub with a pleasing mounded to round form. It has soft green foliage that turns purple-red to maroon in the fall. In late spring to early summer, it puts forth many upright panicles of fragrant, pale purple flowers that are dark purple in bud. The following year's flower buds are set shortly after flowering, so prune directly after it blooms.

This selection of Machurian lilac is an ideal shrub for foundation plantings or shrub borders. Its smaller size is lovely in cottage gardens or as an informal hedge. It needs well-drained, average soil that isn't acidy and in full sun for best flowering. In regions with warm winters, expose this shrub to coldest winter winds to allow for best flower bud formation. It may also be helpful to provide lightest hints of shade in the hottest afternoon summer sun.
