Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation'
Common Lilac, Sensation Lilac
The fragrance of an old-fashioned lilac in bloom is aromatherapy at its finest. European in origin, these tall, open, deciduous shrubs don't look like much when they are not in bloom, but in late spring to early summer they become brag worthy. The cultivar 'Sensation' bears fragrant panicles of purple-violet flowers lined with white that appear along its branches. Next year's flower buds are set shortly after blooming, so all must be pruned directly after their yearly display.
Lilac is easy to grow and does best in full sun and average well-drained soil. 'Sensation' makes a fine feature plant and is especially sweet when planted in masses or as a hedge. Cut its fresh blossoms for fine, long-lasting flower arrangements.
