General Description

Exotically fragrant large flowers grace this tropical shrub. Native to Madagascar this shrub is rare in gardens.

This is an evergreen, many-branched shrub or small tree with lovely shiny leaves. They are opposite each other on the stem and unequal in size. The leaves are lance-shaped or oval, deep green and smooth with prominent veins. Open, rounded flowers are produced in loose clusters in the forks of the branches. They are white and shaped like a pinwheel with five separate petals that form a short tube where it attaches to the plant. Some flowers appear throughout the year with a heavy bloom in spring and summer. The fruit is follicle with grooves and is covered with warts.

Tabernaemontana coffeoides is a hot-blooded baby. It will take a few degrees of frost but a freeze will kill it to the ground. Grow it in containers which can be moved for protection where not hardy. Though tolerant of most soils, preference is for soils on the acidic side, it may exhibit nutrient deficiencies in alkaline conditions. It cannot stand wet feet and is somewhat drought tolerant after establishment but it looks best and flowers more reliably with regular applications of water. It will grow in full sun or partial shade. The plants are more compact in full sun, but the leaves are greener and the flowers more abundant with little light shade.

A fast-growing selection, use crepe jasmine for a quick border, as a hedge and for a specimen. Plant one by the patio, pool or bedroom window to enjoy the intoxicating fragrance as it drifts on the tropical night breezes.
