Tagetes erecta 'Moonsong Deep Orange'
African Marigold, American Marigold
Large powderpuff blooms of glowing orange cover 'Moonsong Deep Orange' all summer. The large flowers of this 2010 All-American Selections winner do not fade with age, and the compact plants bloom for an extended period of time, 70 days under short day conditions and 84 days under long. This cultivar was introduced by Syngenta.
The American marigold is a tall, bushy annual that is native throughout Mexico and Central America. Its dark green, ferny foliage has a distinctive aromatic smell and subtends strong stems topped with large semi-double or fully double flowers that come in an array of warm shades. Plants will continue to bloom while temperatures are warm and favorable. The removal of spent flowers will ensure continued blooming.
Marigolds grow best in full sun and well-drained soil with average fertility. They are also heat tolerant and will withstand periods of drought. These common bedding plants look great in beds and containers. As an added benefit, research suggests that marigold roots emit a substance that deters root-damaging nematodes, which plague certain vegetable crops, so these make fine companion plants for vegetable gardens as well.
