Plant Common Name
Lemmon's Marigold
General Description
This small to medium-sized evergreen shrub bears sunny daisy-flowers during the cooler months. It is native to mountains of southern Arizona and northern Mexico.
Mountain marigold's upright to spreading stems are set with ferny, finely divided, distinctively pungent leaves. Plants are evergreen in frost-free areas. The golden-yellow, cosmos-like flowers are most abundant in fall or winter, with bloom continuing to (or resuming in) spring. A flower or two may appear at other seasons. Self-sowing often occurs.
Copper Canyon daisy thrives in full to partial sun and fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Established plants are highly heat- and drought-tolerant but need regular moisture to look their best. Heavy frosts will kill this tender shrub to the ground, but it will resprout where root-hardy (USDA zones 8 to 11). Well suited for desert gardens but also adaptable to less arid regions, it makes an excellent subject for wildflower plantings, mixed borders, and cottage gardens.
