General Description
The hybrid between English yew (Taxus baccata) and Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata), Taxus x media is a variable evergreen shrub with flat, supple, dark green needles. It includes many cultivars, ranging in habit from low and spreading to upright and columnar. Its toughness, adaptability, tolerance of shearing, and red fleshy fruits (on female plants) make it a popular choice for hedges, foundation plantings, or screening.
This shrub does best in moist, well-drained, acid to slightly alkaline soil. Give it shelter from harsh sun and wind. Deer and self-sown seedlings can be a problem.
